Rhetorical Analysis of Dear Students - 1605 Words
Does College Help or Hurt Our Chances for Success? Stop. Please. Stop. You have changed. I am at a loss for words. I thought that you ââ¬â you wonderful university ââ¬â would forever be the all-important, unchanging, institution of learning that would make me amount to something. Wait, what was that? You have not changed? Oh, thatââ¬â¢s right. You havenââ¬â¢t changed, and therein lies the problem ââ¬â according to Gideon Burton. ââ¬Å"Dear Students: Donââ¬â¢t Let College Unplug Your Futureâ⬠talks about how the Internet is becoming an essential tool for our lives, and that colleges and universities are not adapting in sync with the web. Using repetitive and colloquial diction, real-life examples, and a sarcastic voice, Burton effectively convinces collegeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The company didnââ¬â¢t care. They said, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s what he can do that matters, not where he graduatedâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (90). This example motivates the audience: it s hows them that they donââ¬â¢t need a degree to make money at what they are good at. It motivates them by the fact that the story is about a CEO; CEOs are successful, wealthy, and happy. So this shows that a degree is not necessary to make money in life, but making yourself known online, and being great at what you do, is. It is a logical example. A second example is included in his section titled ââ¬Å"Reality Check #5: when College Gets to 2.0, Theyââ¬â¢ll Be Late For 3.0â⬠(93-94). He illustrates in this example the length of time it takes for colleges to change and add classes that would assist students in new media. He makes it clear that universities think that new media ââ¬â blogging, social networking, and online feedback ââ¬â is a good thing. However, it makes the audience feel that universities and colleges donââ¬â¢t really care about students and their success in the real world. Burton gives a dialogue between a professor and department chair of a un iversity. Candace, the professor, suggests to the department chair that they need to be studying social media. The department chair agrees and tells Candace to get the curriculum committee a proposal so that a class could be created. The department chair says that it will probably be a full year, though, before the class could even be created. Then Candace says that she could at least blogShow MoreRelatedAnalysis of Tom Hanks Vassar Speech in 20051375 Words à |à 5 PagesRhetorical Analysis Tom Hanks Vassar Speech in 2005 Introduction Famous actors, musicians, politicians, artists and authors are often called upon to deliver commencement addresses at prestigious places of higher learning. Being Sponsored By The Boise State League Of Legends Club
The ââ¬Å"Boosted Animalsâ⬠are being sponsored by the Boise State League of Legends Club. Make sure to catch all the games up till the playoffs! The average human may possibly be pondering what in the world does this have to do with the essay topic. Personally, I just enjoy hooking people with things that, with a naked eye, obviously have no correlation to one another but also have everything in common when examined closely. Literacy of a person is unique and varied throughout everyone in the world. Although it may not seem like it, sponsors are responsible for every shape of literacy whether you might think it or not. It could be as simple as your parents or as confusing as yourself. Consequently, the simplest things in life lead to a world of difficulty and education. Literacy is has never stood still but always keeps evolving. My ââ¬Å"soul storyâ⬠is solid proof of everything ââ¬Å"my ownâ⬠emotional literacy stands for. Personally, I have a hard time socializi ng with new people that are relatively close to my age. The fault would be directed to the strict, isolated environment at home. I seem like that shy, egotistical, nerdy-looking person who may be a bit rough to deal with. When it comes to talking to piers that exceed my own age, it seems all natural. Speaking in a formal literacy, I treat every individual with respect when conversing with them about the future and past. Frankly, the people around me seem to respond very well to my formulaic practices. Case Study 1 ââ¬â Microsoft Question 1 Evaluate Microsoftââ¬â¢s strategy in good and poor economic times. Starting to evaluate Microsoftââ¬â¢s strategy in good economic times we see that they have better strategies when they feel comfortable and not threatened by anybody. In the good economic times, Microsoft has managed to adjust its marketing message in order to meet customersââ¬â¢ needs and requirements. It is well known that in good economic times people tend to buy products based on their reputation, pressure being put by people surrounding them. How did Microsoft get its reputation in the first place? Here are some examples: 1. 1980s DOS operating system for IBM computers 2. Magazine advertising 3. The companyââ¬â¢ slogan ââ¬Å"Where Do You Want to Go Today? â⬠4. The beginning of Internet All these brought fame to Windows and set the stakes very high. Through magazine advertisements, the company has been able to reach all types of potential customers. Their slogan made people thing that somebody actually cares about them and their wants and needs. On another note, during poor economic times people tend to set their priorities straight and stop spending so much on products that do not need to be renewed or do not prove to be worthy. That is why during the recession, Microsoft lost some of its own customers to Apple because they did not manage to find a proper strategy through which they could get their customers to keep buying from them. The main problem was the launch of Vista operating system. It cost quite a lot and the reviews were very poor, while Apple came with new products and a new operating system, with a considerably bigger price but also with better reviews that the latest Microsoft product which made customers question Microsoftââ¬â¢s products. Question 2 Discuss the pros and cons of Microsoftââ¬â¢s most recent ââ¬Å¾Iââ¬â¢m a PCâ⬠campaign. Is Microsoft doing a good thing by acknowledging Appleââ¬â¢s campaign in its own marketing message? Why or why not? I feel that even though it is good for Microsoft to acknowledge the presence of their competitors, Apple, theà message that they sent with the ââ¬Å¾Iââ¬â¢m a PCâ⬠campaign was a rather poor one. Why? Because it seems that Microsoft did not even spend that much time thinking about a brand new campaign and just took their competitorsââ¬â¢ (Appleââ¬â¢s) and made it their own. In a way or another it just highlights the obvious differences between the two brands. However, this mes sage gave showed clearly the difference between the two brands, which made customers feel good about the fact that they own a Microsoft product and made new customers want to have Microsoftââ¬â¢s products.
